As a father, what's your opinion on the whole "designer baby" thing where you can have a doctor fuck with a embryo to alter it's appearance to give it "advantages"?

I think it is not my place to tell anyone else they shouldn't do it. But personally, its a tough question. On one hand, this could lead to preventing terminal illnesses like diabetes and asthma, on the other hand, you are kinda fucking with the natural order of things and we don't know the long term effects of this kind of genetic tampering.

The long term effects are that its not yet an exact science and will cause mutations in other parts of the genome. Long term this could cause serious genetic deficiencies to form, mutations that nature will be doing its best to eradicate while our technology keeps people that have them alive.

That same concern is brought up for GMO stuff too. Though these things are tested repeatedly with multiple agencies validating before they hit the store shelves, we still haven't been experimenting with such processes long enough to really know what consequences there are.

Yes you can improve a species using this technology, but we're also playing with atomic bombs here and could very easily cause serious consequences for the environment and humanity. More testing is required, only time will tell if this is a bad idea or not.
